Leadership role within Company that supervises accounting department activities, applies principles of accounting to analyze financial information, and prepares reports by performing duties personally or through others.

This individual will report to the CFO, work closely with executive management, investments, investor relations and asset management teams, manage a department of accountants, and be responsible for all facets of accounting and financial reporting functions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Establish and maintain the Company’s accounting principles, practices, procedures, and initiatives, consistent with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (“GAAP”).
  • Produce financial packages, management reports and quarterly board reports.
  • Manage all quarterly investor reporting and distributions to investors.
  • Manage multiple company tax returns, including but not limited to corporate and partnership returns.
  • Oversee the Company’s annual audit in accordance with GAAP and act as point of contact for external auditors.
  • Manage the compilation and consolidation of all financial reports for company.
  • Lead the valuation efforts, including appraisal process, and work cohesively with either the investment team or asset management teams as necessary to ensure accuracy of our fair market values of all investment activity.
  • Ensure we have accurately updated models for all investment activity to provide accurate performance projections.
  • Compiles and analyzes financial information to review and approve entries to accounts, such as general ledgers accounts, documenting business transactions.
  • Manage the annual budgeting process alongside the Controller, Property Accounting and ensure accuracy of all corporate and consolidated budgets.
  • Manage accounts payable processes and ensure timely payment to all vendors.
  • Manage the preparation of workpapers in connection with the Company’s annual financial audit.
  • Review of (and compliance with) legal documents, including but not limited to operating agreements, subscription documents and partnership agreements.
  • Contribute meaningfully to the preparation of all quarterly board meeting materials and ensure all materials are provided to the board within the requisite deadlines.
  • Present company financial performance at company meetings and board meetings, as requested.
  • Perform periodic reviews of Yardi permissions to ensure compliance with internal controls.
  • Assist with special projects, including but not limited to preparing ad hoc reports and preparing additional reporting based on management’s needs.
  • Consistently look for ways to gain efficiencies within the team and the functional areas, including additional software implementations and resources needed to scale the business.
  • Work closely and cohesively with Controller, Property Accounting on all department related functions.
  • In conjunction with CFO and Controller, Property Accounting, establishes, modifies, documents, and coordinates implementation of accounting and accounting control procedures.
  • In conjunction with CFO and Controller, Property Accounting, oversees the accounting software systems and creates efficiencies through the use / automation of such. Ensures systems remain current with proper security.
  • Develops and implements cost control measures, as mutually agreed by Executive Team.

  • Lead, manage and develop a department of senior and junior accountants.
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Company’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and correcting employees; addressing complaints and resolving issues.
  • Ensure the team is adequately staffed to handle meeting all reporting deadlines assigned.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting.
  • CPA strongly preferred.
  • 10+ years prior real estate accounting experience, including 5 years of management experience
  • Experience in consolidated financial reporting
  • Experience leading and building teams
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, with an emphasis in Excel
  • Yardi Voyager and Elevate Suite experience a plus
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent organization and time management skills and the ability to prioritize workload
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively, maintain confidentiality, and produce a work product accurately with a high degree of attention to detail
