Job Details

Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal advice and guidance to Senior Management and departments on various legal and other issues as they affect the operations of the company
  • Maintain current knowledge of legislative and regulatory developments affecting the automobile residual market in the various states and the operations
  • Review legal implications of various statutory and regulatory changes and court rulings
  • Manage retention, work and billing of outside counsel performing legal work and Plan Governing Committees, including coordination of legal issues or actions which may be ongoing in several jurisdictions.
  • Provide legal advice to State Plan Governing Committees/Boards, as appropriate or necessary.
  • Assist staff in the preparation and submission of rate, form and Plan filings with the various regulatory agencies
  • Attend hearings or other legal proceedings as necessary before the courts as well as federal and state regulatory agencies
  • Review, draft and negotiate contracts and other agreements
  • Provide representation before various insurance and industry associations

Experience

8+ years of experience as a practicing attorney, preferably as in-house counsel for an insurance company. Familiarity with state insurance regulations, auto insurance filings, administrative law, litigation and insurance governmental relations desired.

Skills/Knowledge

In-depth knowledge of the insurance industry and the insurance regulatory environment.
Residual market automobile insurance plan rules and regulations knowledge preferred.
Demonstrate strong leadership capabilities and exercise excellent judgment in cross- functional situations.
Effective problem-solving skills, including ability to analyze complex issues, find root cause of the problem and consider a wide range of alternatives before acting.
Demonstrate strong communication skills, both written and verbal, including the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups or individuals.
Demonstrate excellent organizational and customer service skills.
Ability to work independently and interact professionally and effectively in a team environment.
Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office productivity tools (e.g. Outlook, Word, Excel)
Ability to multi-task and demonstrate flexibility while maintaining attention to detail.

Education

A Bachelor's (BS/BA) degree, Juris Doctorate (JD) degree and admission in good standing to a State Bar are required. Additional Bar memberships in Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey or California is a plus.
