Job Details

The Estimator will be responsible for accurately assessing the cost of projects, including labor, materials, equipment, and other related expenses. This position requires strong technical knowledge, experience in civil construction, and the ability to work collaboratively with project managers, engineers, and clients to deliver accurate and timely estimates.

Responsibilities:

  • Review project plans, specifications, and other documentation to develop comprehensive cost estimates for roadway, concrete, bridge, airport, railroad, and earthwork construction projects.
  • Prepare detailed quantity takeoffs for materials, labor, and equipment.
  • Solicit and evaluate bids from subcontractors and suppliers, ensuring competitive pricing and quality standards.
  • Analyze and apply labor rates, material costs, and equipment costs based on project location, scope, and schedule.
  • Coordinate with project managers, engineers, and clients to identify project-specific needs and potential cost-saving opportunities.
  • Develop project estimates that include direct and indirect costs, overhead, contingency, and profit margins.
  • Assist in bid preparation and presentation to clients, ensuring all relevant factors are considered in the final proposal.
  • Maintain accurate and organized records of estimates, change orders, and project cost history for future reference.
  • Identify risks, discrepancies, and potential cost overruns and communicate them proactively to management and clients.
  • Stay current on industry trends, materials, and construction methods to provide accurate and competitive estimates.
  • Work closely with project teams during pre-construction and construction phases to ensure estimates align with actual project costs.

Specific Job Knowledge, Skills And Ability:

  • Ability to consistently lead estimates for bids up to $300,000,000. Must have a track record of consistently putting estimates together that give the field the opportunity to beat budget.
  • Proficient in understanding staging/phasing and project scope.
Must have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines. Must be able to endure time pressures leading up to bid submission and on bid days.
  • Bid2Win Estimating software.
  • Blue Beam, Agtek and Sketch up.
  • Must have a thorough understanding of special insurance requirements, such as builder’s risk, hazardous, railroad, etc.
  • Must have an understanding of different materials required for construction, by project type.
  • Must have an understanding of hold harmless and indemnity clauses in specifications.
  • Must have an understanding of liquidated damages.
  • Must have a thorough understanding of project labor agreements and labor requirements.
  • Must master the process of doing take-offs by phase, stage, area, etc.
  • Must have a thorough understanding of time impact analysis and time related overhead
  • Must be familiar with Contract Accounting
  • Must have an understanding of critical path and track delays.
  • Must master P6, SureTrak and MS Project.
