Job Details

The Medical Director is responsible for the coordination and supervision of the medical and psychiatric care provided at the facility. This position is responsible for ensuring that the care provided is consistent with best practice and meets Telecare’s standards of excellence.
  • A minimum of 5 years clinical experience in the treatment of adults with serious mental illness, including those with comorbid medical and/or substance use disorders
  • A medical degree from a medical school accredited by the American Medical Association or the American Osteopathic Association and successful completion of residency training program in psychiatry
  • An active California Medical License, in good standing
  • All opportunities are contingent upon successful completion and receipt of acceptable results of the applicable post-offer physical examination, 2-step PPD test for tuberculosis, acceptable criminal background clearances, excluded party sanctions, and degree or license verification. If the position requires driving, valid driver’s license, a motor vehicle clearance and proof of auto insurance is required at time of employment and must be maintained throughout employment. Additional regulatory, contractual or local requirements may apply
  • Prior experience as a Medical Director is strongly preferred
  • Experience supervising health care professionals
  • Experience with Quality Improvement and Risk Management activities
  • Board Certification in Psychiatry
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Demonstrates our mission, purpose, values, and beliefs in everyday language and during contact with internal and external stakeholders
  • Plans, organizes, directs and supervises all medical staff functions, including services provided by non-behavioral health medical providers
  • Manages all medical services within allocated budgetary parameters
  • Guarantees continuous physician coverage
  • Coordinates and schedules additional physician coverage for prolonged vacancies
  • Participates in recruitment and retention activities for medical staff
  • Makes use of management practices that include empowerment of staff, the provision of clear and concise expectations regarding duties assigned employees, frequent feedback focusing on both positive and problematic aspects of work performance, and other management practices that are consistent with Continuous Quality Improvement

  • Promotes and maintains harmonious and effective relationships and communications within the department and other departments
  • Accepts responsibility as the chairperson of committees (such as the Quality Assurance Performance Improvement, Utilization Review, and Pharmacy and Therapeutics committees), as assigned
  • Collaborates with other administrative staff in strategic planning activities with the goal of ensuring ongoing effectiveness of the facility
  • Assists in the development of facility policies and procedures
  • As a member of the Clinical Management Team, participates as the medical representative and assists in the development of admission and discharge policies
  • Ensures that the facility maintains compliance with all related state, federal, and local licensing regulations and accreditation standards
  • Participate in Root Cause Analyses and reviews incident reports as directed. Makes recommendations for risk management and continuous quality improvement.
  • Establishes and defines standards that ensure safe and therapeutically effective care
  • Assesses the quality of care rendered by the facility and medical staff
  • Establishes and maintains a comprehensive Quality Assurance, Performance Improvement program within the medical staff; this includes frequent collaboration with other departments, employee education, and a focus on monitoring departmental standards; actively removes barriers to the provision of high quality care
  • Committee participation with Medical Directors at the corporate office at discretion of the Chief Medical Officer and/or Chief, Physician Services Organization
  • Duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted and/or changed at the discretion of the Chief Medical Officer and/or Chief, Physician Services Organization
  • Provides back-up in the event of physician absence, including the provision of direct care
  • Attends court in the absence of the designated physician or psychiatrist, as directed
  • Provides routine technical medical and psychiatric education to all staff on topics related to medication, psychotherapy, treatment planning and care coordination.
  • Provides consultation to non-physician staff, for example, consultation to:
o Nursing staff regarding medication and interpretation of laboratory results
o Social work regarding medical-legal issues
o Rehabilitation staff regarding psychotherapeutic issues
