Job Details
The Design Engineer Manager will work in concert with other functional leadership to ensure strategic alignment of their team with New Product Development (NPD) goals including accountability that all new products are designed to meet performance requirements, pertinent regulation, and applicable codes & standards. This position will supervise work to design and test product while supporting the implementation of New Products, in a cross functional setting. The role will guide development of their team to expand value to the organization.
Primary Responsibilities
Lead and support teams in a collaborative environment, working with other departments including Executive Leadership, Sales, Product Management, Marketing, Quality and Production.
Build relationships with business partners, internal to group/department, internal to company, and external to company.
Communicate with all levels of the business, utilizing best tools, and with appropriate key performance indicators (KPI)
Understand the requirements of customers, product management, regulatory, codes, standards, manufacturing, and quality.
Support the review of MRDs.
Create/author Technical Specifications and/or Charter documents.
Develop designs that meet the MRD, Technical Specification, and/or Charter documents.
Manage the planning, design, prototype procurement, testing, and documentation, iterating as required, through the Mueller Phase Gate System to develop New Products.
Lead and/or contribute to design failure mode and effect analysis (DFMEA) sessions with cross functional teams.
Guide and approve production of high quality design documentation, in the form of test reports, drawings, and various analysis.
Investigate and resolve deviating performance or characteristics via root-cause analysis and other problem-solving activities to identify effective corrective actions.
Ability to Lead teams and execute engineering work, as a “player / coach”.
Ability to mentor other engineers who desire to grow into future managers.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
8+ years of experience in Mechanical design using CREO or Solidworks or equivalent software
Strong communication, presentation, and leadership skills
Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment
Excellent technical and analytical skills
Working knowledge of casting, machine, and painting processes.
Working knowledge of testing methodologies, testing processes, and standards.
Working knowledge of DFMEAs
Strong technical leadership and system integration engineering / project management skills
Qualifications
Prior management experience
Prior Project Management experience
GD&T knowledge
Structural FEA and/or CFD experience
Black Belt or Green Belt
PMP certification
FE/EIT or PE
Master Science in Mechanical Engineering or related field
