Job Description
The Estimator / Scheduler will be responsible for the preparation of accurate and timely cost estimates for assigned projects and capable of performing medium to complex scheduling assignments for retrofit and green field capital projects globally, ranging from $200 million - $800 million USD.

Functions Include:
  • Project cost estimating for industrial projects in industries such as pulp and paper/forestry, renewable energy, biofuels, specialty chemicals, and minerals refining
  • Preparing and providing detailed cost estimates divided by process work packages
  • Evaluating vendor quotations, compiling the prices in the estimates (this includes a general knowledge of tender package details: hard deliverables, spare parts, field assistance for commissioning and start up)
  • Breaking down vendor quotations into organized process work packages, sub-divided by labor, material, and equipment costs
  • Participation in detailed estimate review between study/project manager and client representatives
  • Continual updating of the in-house database for equipment pricing, material pricing, unit prices and labor rates, (including regular review with contractors to ensure up-to-date prices and rates)
  • Responsible for the preparation of overall detailed cost estimate
  • Analyzes documents, specifications, proposals, addendums in preparation for pricing
  • Performs any estimate related oral and /or written communications with project managers.
  • Prior to the start of a project, create and revise preliminary master project schedules detailing the sequence of all work to be performed.
  • Maintain master schedule for each project and identify and record the impact of work performed and not performed as scheduled. Evaluate actual progress and provide regular schedule updates.
  • Contribute to the development of working schedules for estimating prior to proposal date, which sufficiently illustrates the sequence of work activities and contract time.
  • Prepare and issue proposal and preliminary schedules.
  • Work with project teams to identify and sequence key activities, create resource-loaded schedules with key materials and resources, setting up the project baseline, updating progress and reporting
  • Consult the appropriate project team members and estimating procedures as a means of ensuring that proper planning is completed prior to the commencement of work.
  • Work with Project Managers and clients to monitor critical path(s) of the schedule to identify risks and opportunities and develop mitigation or recovery plans
  • Identify and monitor project benchmark dates for key activities and deliverables.
  • Participate in the development and maintenance of periodic (weekly, monthly, quarterly) status reports to keep stakeholders informed on project progress
  • Works closely with Project Managers, Engineers, Manufacturing, and Estimating to identify potential changes in scope and quantify the impact of each change to the schedule in a timely fashion
  • Import major Vendors and Contractor’s schedules into the master progress schedule and make necessary logic ties
  • Review contractors’ schedules for adherence to project specifications and need dates
  • Review accuracy of contractor’s schedule updates and adherence to their initial plan
  • Support the development of process flows, policies, procedures training material, and scheduling best practices
  • Develop and maintain a portfolio of schedules
  • Generate Client’s shutdown and commissioning schedules as required by the Project
  • Develop Cash Flow Analysis and Curves to allow Client’s to control costs and when they can be disbursed
  • Develop and maintain Cash Flows for internal engineering mandates
  • Generate and provide Cost Control Spreadsheets or documents
  • Responsible for the control and monitoring of project total expenditures including verifying and checking of invoices and claims from suppliers, vendors and subcontractors to confirm that all project expenditures are captured and properly recorded
  • Provide planning and cost controlling support for all projects which includes variation reporting, monitoring of milestone progress to the preparation of customer billing processes, etc.

Responsibilities:
  • Reviewing project site plans and P&ID’s prior to price preparation
  • Obtains input from engineering discipline staff, as required
  • Performs quantity take-off from construction drawings where applicable
  • Obtains and maintains material pricing
  • Maintains files and correspondence on active and completed projects
  • Drives Estimating process, procedure compliance and consistency
  • Performs Post Bid and Post Project Analysis
  • Maintains Estimating data systems to ensure they are kept up to date
  • Assists in the training of new Estimating staff as appropriate
  • Assists in maintenance of estimating department policies procedures, processes and standards
  • Collects data and reports on established business Key Performance Indicators
  • Provide implementation / maintenance of the project cost tracking system to monitor and analyze budget, commitments, actual cost and cost variances
  • Works with Project Managers in preparation of project cost estimates.
  • Evaluate contractor / vendor / supplier quotes versus project estimates
  • Gather and provide consolidated reporting on cost and man-hours for direct and indirect costs for contractor and owner on a timely basis
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary engineering environment
  • Prepares and coordinates the preparation of full cost estimates on conceptual, and detailed estimates for a variety of large industrial projects
  • In preparation of full cost estimates, the Estimator will interpret documentation, specifications and design drawings to understand the scope / contents of the estimates.
  • Responsible for maintaining large working files as supporting documentation for estimating figures including current, accurate information on prices from vendors and material suppliers (eg. steel, piping, cables, etc…)
  • Confirm that knowledge in the field remains current through participation in appropriate training and development activities.

Qualifications:
You must have a right to live and work in the United States.
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field is preferred
  • 5-10 years of experience working on capital projects in Pulp and Paper, Energy, Chemicals, Mining and Construction Industries
  • Has experience in developing the costing procedures and strategy for a given project.
  • Working knowledge of Timberline, Primavera, and Microsoft Project are essential
  • Working knowledge of business software (Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point)
  • Proficient in building, embedding, and managing multiple project estimates and schedules
  • Understand detailed workflow for definition, engineering, construction and start-up
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret engineering documents
  • Demonstrated experience in interfacing with clients, engineering, construction, and vendors on cost estimates and schedule related topics
  • Strong partnering skills to lead, influence, and drive behavior change without formal authority
  • Good knowledge of job cost fundamentals and basic cost reporting principles
  • Self-motivated with excellent organizational skills
  • Strong communication skills — oral and written in English
  • Ability to work independently and effectively under pressure
  • Adaptable to flexible work schedule when required to meet deadlines
  • Ability to attend to detail and work in a time-conscious and time-effective manner
  • Client focused, developing and sustaining productive customer relationships while meeting the company’s needs
  • Setting and maintaining high standards of performance for self and assuming responsibility and accountability for successfully completing assignments and tasks.
  • Proactive in taking prompt and appropriate action to ensure objectives are accomplished. Apply necessary follow-up to monitor progress and results of project tasks and assignments
  • As required, support or participate in presentations to large project audiences.
  • Sound knowledge of scheduling systems, principles, and practices required
  • Willing to travel to mill / industrial site location from time to time to interface with plant personnel.
  • Must be legally eligible to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.
