Job Details

Responsibilities:
Develop, maintain, and participate in an innovative veterinary care program consistent with regulatory requirements and professional standards.
Establish relationships with area veterinarians and other service providers for partnerships.
Ensure appropriate animal behavior and husbandry practices, including prevention, diagnosis, and management of diseases; daily observation of animals; documentation of clinical observations; maintenance of medical records; prompt resolution of conditions indicating risk, pain, or distress; and implementation of best practice adoption procedures.
Act as a key contact for oversight/regulatory bodies concerned with animal care and licensure.
Represent the facility at regional, national, or other meetings, advisory panels, committees, oversight bodies, and professional organizations.
Assist in recruiting and training additional veterinary staff.
Ensure that staff, including interns, visiting veterinarians, veterinary services, scientific lecturers, and volunteers, are trained and managed effectively. Provide direction, set goals, establish priorities, delegate work, monitor progress, and provide performance feedback, coaching, and training.
Collaborate with management to develop strategic plans for the medical center and processes for program growth and development.
Support the public program department in developing a leading education program for youth and animal industry professionals.
Participate in the on-call schedule for the veterinary team, with rotating dates 3-4 days a week.
Be available for occasional weekend events.
Liaise with medical partners regarding specialty services and medical transfers.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Manage relationships with veterinarians, partner organizations, regulatory agencies, etc.
Oversee and coordinate all aspects of animal care and the personnel associated with veterinary care, behavior, and adoption.
Primary Interactions
Interact with other veterinarians, the Director, managers, medical staff, vendors, consultants, contractors, colleague veterinarians, and the public.
Education, Skills, and Experience Requirements
Education & Experience:

DVM/VMD degree or equivalent in veterinary medicine, licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the state of California.
5-7 years of related clinical and management experience.
Experience in an adoption center, animal behavior/training, and/or shelter is a plus.
Ability to travel locally/nationally.
Eligible for DEA permit.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Practical veterinary experience with domestic animals in an adoption center or related setting.
Spay/neuter experience, preferably high-volume techniques or a willingness to learn.
General surgical skills.
Understanding of disease management in a shelter setting.
Demonstrated experience in managing people and leading teams.
Strong oral/written communication and presentation skills.
Proficiency in office software (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Critical thinking ability and sound judgment.
Ability to work effectively and persuasively with the public.
Ability to teach classes for the public and participate in professional classes.
Veterinary degree from an AVMA-accredited school and an active license to practice veterinary medicine in California.
Deep understanding of shelter and behavioral medicine.
