APIs underpin the internet but are still painful to work with. They are often untyped, unstandardized, and out-of-sync across multiple sources of truth. We enable businesses to offer “Stripe-level” SDKs (client libraries) and Docs for their REST API. Inspired by internal tooling we saw at AWS and Palantir, we’re building Fern to let every engineering team offer easy-to-use and well-documented APIs.
Founded in 2022, we’re less than 20 people, building open source, and backed by Bessemer and YC. We work together in our office in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY. Our customers include Square, Auth0, Intuit, Cohere, ElevenLabs, and Webflow.

About the Role: This role is ideal for ambitious engineers with entrepreneurial goals. Many of us are former or future founders, and this is an opportunity to scale a company from $1M to $10M ARR while partnering with fast-growing tech companies shaping the future of software. We value in-person collaboration and work out of our office in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn.

What You'll Do:
- Be a power-user of Vercel. We host a multi-tenant Next.js app that powers 100s of documentation websites. You'll be the owner of the backend for our frontend—which is open source!
- Drive zero-to-one features. You'll take customer requests, architect a solution, develop the feature, and announce the release to our customers. We've got a tight feedback loop that's driven by customer requests.
- Build with industry-leading tools. You'll get hands-on with React, TypeScript, Next.js, TailwindCSS, shadcn components, and AWS. We use the best tools for the job and prioritize developer experience over cost (looking at you, Vercel).
- Build our team. We’re growing, and you will work directly with the CEO and CTO to bring in talented engineers.
What You'll Bring:
- 3+ years of professional backend or full-stack development experience (70/30 backend lean), ideally including startup environments.
- Experience working on self-hosted software is great.
- Top academic background/school - our recent hires come from Harvard, Stanford, Brown, etc.
- Experience at a reputable, venture-backed startup.
- Ex-founder experience is a major plus - we're looking for future founders!
- We like to see strong and impressive projects/things that candidates have built - please make sure to ask candidates to share/talk about this!
- Strong proficiency in TypeScript is a must-have.
- Vercel experience is a bonus/strong plus.
