Job Description
Create detailed 2D and 3D technical drawings and plans for cabinetry using CAD software, based on specifications from builders, architects, and designers.
Translate conceptual sketches, blueprints, or verbal instructions into precise cabinetry designs, ensuring compliance with project requirements and industry standards.
Collaborate with builders and project managers to understand cabinetry needs, including measurements, materials, and aesthetic preferences.
Produce shop drawings, assembly instructions, and bills of materials (BOMs) for cabinet manufacturing and installation.
Review and revise designs based on feedback from clients, builders, or production teams to ensure accuracy and functionality.
Ensure designs adhere to woodworking standards, tolerances, and hardware specifications (e.g., hinges, slides, and drawer organizers).
Maintain an organized library of CAD files, project documentation, and version control for easy retrieval and updates.
Assist in estimating material quantities and project costs for cabinetry installations.
Conduct site visits when necessary to verify measurements and ensure designs align with on-site conditions.
Stay updated on cabinetry design trends, materials, and CAD software advancements to enhance design efficiency and quality.
Required Skills
Technical Skills:
Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or cabinet-specific software like Cabinet Vision or Microvellum).
Strong understanding of technical drawing standards, including 2D drafting and 3D modeling techniques.
Knowledge of woodworking processes, cabinetry construction, and joinery techniques.
Familiarity with cabinet hardware (e.g., Blum hinges, slides, and rollout trays) and material specifications (e.g., laminates, veneers, solid wood).
Ability to generate accurate bills of materials (BOMs) and quantity take-offs for cabinetry projects.
Basic understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) for precise cabinetry designs.
Soft Skills:
Attention to detail to ensure precision in measurements and adherence to design specifications.
Strong communication skills to collaborate with builders, architects, and clients, and to interpret design requirements effectively.
Time management skills to meet project deadlines and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
Problem-solving skills to address design challenges and adapt to client feedback or site constraints.
Organizational skills to maintain accurate records, CAD files, and project documentation.
Additional Skills:
Experience with Building Information Modeling (BIM) principles is a plus for integration with broader construction projects.
Basic knowledge of construction processes and building codes to ensure cabinetry designs align with project requirements.
Familiarity with CNC technology and its application in cabinetry manufacturing is an advantage.
Qualifications
Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in CAD Drafting, Engineering, Architecture, or a related field, or equivalent vocational training.
1-3 years of experience as a CAD Technician, preferably with a focus on cabinetry or millwork design.
Certification in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Cabinet Vision) is preferred but not required.
Practical experience through apprenticeships or internships in cabinetry design or woodworking is highly desirable.
Work Environment
Primarily office-based, working at a CAD workstation, with occasional site visits to verify measurements or consult with builders.
Typical hours are Monday to Friday, 35-40 hours per week, with flexibility for remote work depending on project needs.
Collaborative environment, working closely with builders, architects, and manufacturing teams.
