Job Details
The Controller will be responsible for managing the organization’s daily accounting functions, maintaining accurate financial records, and ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting standards. This position plays a key leadership role in the annual audit process and supports strategic financial decision-making through timely reporting and analysis.
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, collaborative, and experienced in nonprofit financial management.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee and perform all daily accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll entries, and bank reconciliations.
Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards (FASB).
Lead the annual audit process, serving as the primary liaison to external auditors and ensuring timely completion of all audit requirements.
Manage the annual Form 990 preparation in collaboration with auditors and leadership.
Monitor cash flow and assist in preparing budgets, forecasts, and financial planning reports.
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory requirements and internal policies.
Maintain and improve internal controls and accounting procedures.
Support grant tracking, restricted fund accounting, and reporting to funders as needed.
Supervise accounting staff or contractors, as applicable.
Partner with program leaders to support financial understanding and decision-making.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or advanced degree a plus).
Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a nonprofit environment preferred.
Solid understanding of nonprofit GAAP, fund accounting, and compliance requirements.
Experience leading audits and working with external auditors.
Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, or similar) and Excel.
Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
Ability to work independently while collaborating across departments.
