Job Details

Job Purpose
Maintains, repairs, and overhauls school buses and other company vehicles. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of maintenance tasks. May direct the work of others. Works under general supervision with some latitude for independent judgment. May assist in training less experienced technicians or new employees.

Major Responsibilities
1. Repairs and maintains school buses and other company vehicles while adhering to FMCSA guidelines.
2. Inspects and tests equipment at prescribed intervals of time and usage or upon malfunction or breakdown.
3. Inspects, tests, and aligns bus lights and wheels and maintains electrical systems and controls. Balances wheels to minimize wear on tires and rotates wheels at prescribed mileage intervals. Tunes up engine to maintain combustion control standards. Adjusts equipment to standards set by state DOT for motor vehicle inspections and safety standards.
4. Disassembles, inspects, and replaces worn or broken parts. Fixes and adjusts new or repaired parts. Oils and greases vehicles; changes filters.
5. Test drives repaired equipment.
6. Performs limited bodywork and repainting on vehicles after a breakdown or accident, as needed or as skills allow.
7. Maintains part usage records and orders repair parts from designated suppliers. May be required to maintain small parts storeroom.
8. Notifies supervisor of potentially dangerous equipment and corrective action taken.
9. May direct work on an as needed basis of less skilled technicians.
10. All other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education & Certifications Required
1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Technical training preferred.
3. Must possess or be able to acquire CDL Operator’s license (Class B) with P endorsement within 60 days of hire.

Experience & Skills Required
1. Minimum of 3 years of experience in the transportation industry preferred.
2. 3+ years of related mechanical experience or trade school with endorsements such as Preventative Maintenance or Brake Certifications preferred.
3. CDL required.
4. Good verbal communication skills.
5. The ability to work early morning hours.
6. Must maintain a professional and respectful attitude toward fellow employees and customers.
7. Dress in a professional and appropriate manner for a business environment.
8. Perform all job functions in the safest manner adhering to OSHA guidelines & other applicable Federal& State laws.
9. Execute all job duties while following company policy and procedure.
10. Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office.
11. Ability to use or learn to use internet, additional programs as required and office equipment, including fax and phones or other electronic devices.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
1. Ability to successfully complete dexterity test and DOT physical and comply with drug free workplace policy.
2. Maintenance shop/garage/school bus yard /Office/On-the-road. Some outdoor work.
3. Must be able to work in a crouched position or on back lying on mechanic’s dolly beneath motor vehicle equipment.
4. Subjected to dust, dirt, and greasy conditions.
5. Some local travel, typically within 50 miles from base.
6. Pushing/Pulling: Opening service door, emergency door, bus hood, steering, windows, applying service & parking brake, adjusting mirrors & wheelchairs, student evacuations up to 120 lbs and for up to 40 feet.
7. Lifting: Bus hood, trash box, challenged passenger into their seats, wheel chocks, tire chains, emergency equipment. Up to 40 lbs.
8. Walking: Crossing lot, up and down bus aisle, around exterior of bus.
9. Sitting: Up to 2-3 hours.
10. Climbing: Steps in and out of bus, cleaning windshield, under hood inspection.
11. Reaching: Under hood inspection, cleaning windows, applying tie-downs, safety vests, car seats, adjust mirrors, opening emergency door from ground, checking roof hatch, applying service brake, clutch and accelerator.
12. Gripping: Doors, knobs, switches, handles, hand tools, etc.
13. Hearing: Detecting problems with passengers on bus, emergency vehicles, unusual engine noises.
14. Bending/Stooping/Squatting: Pre-trip inspection, applying tie-downs, sweeping, checking for sleeping children multiple times per route per day.
15. Seeing: Driving, reading street signs, route sheets.
16. Communicating: Via the English language with passengers, parents, school officials, dispatch, monitor if applicable.
17. Dropping: From emergency door to ground.
