Y Combinator-backed healthcare SaaS startup is raising its Series B and looking for an EMR Architect SME to join the core product team. This is a high-impact, high-visibility role with a clear path to Chief Data Architect. You’ll define and lead the data strategy as the platform expands beyond home health into other outpatient specialties. Requirements
- Design a specialty-agnostic clinical data model, enabling rapid expansion from home health to all outpatient verticals
- Define and own the data architecture blueprint (patients, visits, claims, payments) and ensure consistency across services
- Guide seamless migration from our home-health schema to a flexible multi-specialty data system without disrupting production customers
- Develop scalable ETL pipelines to transform diverse EMR exports (HL7, FHIR, EDI) into clean, normalized tables
- Implement data quality measures, including integrity constraints, observability tooling, and domain-focused dashboards
- Architect around HIPAA compliance and security, embedding controls into pipelines and schemas
- Build or maintain identity resolution services to eliminate duplicate patient/provider/payer records
- Ensure SQL performance and relational design keep pipelines fast and scalable under large data volumes
- Design real-time/event-streaming pipelines (e.g., Kafka) for ingest and transformation
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or related field
- 10-20 years of hands-on experience owning healthcare data systems (0–20, depending on seniority)
- Proven in a chief or senior architect role with real decision-making authority
- Experience building production-grade, multi-specialty healthcare data models (EMR, billing, claims)
- Strong working knowledge of HL7, FHIR, EDI 837/835, ICD‑10, CPT, and translating them into normalized database schemas
- In-house architecture experience on cross-specialty EMR platforms (e.g., Epic, Athenahealth, Abridge)
- Expertise in relational database design and SQL tuning to maintain performance at scale
- Demonstrated ability to build identity resolution systems for deduplication of clinical and payer entities
- Experience working within HIPAA or similar regulatory frameworks, embedding compliance into engineering
- Excellent written/verbal communication, with ability to align stakeholders and collaborate cross-functionally
