Job Details
Key Responsibilities
Construction Contracts & Project Support
Draft, review, negotiate, and manage construction-related agreements, including:
Prime contracts
Subcontracts
Design-build agreements
Purchase orders
Vendor and supplier contracts
Joint venture agreements
Advise project teams on contract interpretation, risk allocation, claims, change orders, and dispute avoidance.
Develop and maintain standard contract templates and legal procedures.
Claims, Litigation & Dispute Resolution
Manage construction claims, payment disputes, mechanics liens, delay claims, defect claims, and insurance matters.
Coordinate and oversee outside counsel, mediators, arbitrators, and expert consultants.
Develop strategies for dispute prevention and resolution.
Support collection efforts and enforcement of contractual rights.
Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management
Monitor and advise on federal, state, and local regulations affecting construction operations.
Ensure compliance with licensing, permitting, procurement, labor, safety, and environmental requirements.
Assist with risk assessment and mitigation across all business units.
Support compliance programs and internal investigations as necessary.
Employment & Labor Matters
Provide legal guidance on employment-related issues, including:
Hiring and termination practices
Wage and hour compliance
Workplace investigations
Employee policies and handbooks
Discrimination and harassment matters
Partner with Human Resources on employment risk management and training initiatives.
Corporate & Business Operations
Advise executive leadership on corporate governance and business strategy.
Support mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, and business expansion initiatives.
Review and negotiate leases, real estate agreements, and financing documents.
Assist with company insurance programs and risk transfer strategies.
Training & Internal Counsel
Educate management and project teams on legal and contractual best practices.
Conduct training on contract administration, compliance requirements, and risk management.
Serve as a trusted advisor to executives and operational leaders.
Qualifications Required
Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
Active license to practice law in good standing.
7+ years of legal experience, with substantial focus on construction law.
Experience representing or working within a general contractor, construction company, engineering firm, or real estate developer.
Strong knowledge of:
Construction contracts
Mechanics liens
Construction claims and disputes
Employment law
Insurance and risk management
Regulatory compliance
Preferred
Prior in-house legal experience within the construction industry.
Experience with public works projects and government contracting.
Familiarity with design-build, EPC, and alternative delivery methods.
Experience managing outside counsel and litigation budgets.
