Job Title: Payroll Lead

Overview:

We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Payroll Lead to oversee payroll operations within our Finance department. This leadership role is critical to ensuring the accurate and timely processing of payroll for all employees, while maintaining strict compliance with internal controls, tax regulations, and audit standards. The ideal candidate brings a strong understanding of payroll systems, fringe benefits, multi-state tax requirements, and will play a key role in driving process improvements and financial accountability.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead the end-to-end payroll process, ensuring timely and accurate payroll for all employees in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.

Collaborate closely with Finance, HR, and Accounting teams to ensure payroll aligns with organizational policies and budget forecasts.

Administer and reconcile fringe benefits including healthcare, retirement plans, bonuses, and other compensation-related programs.

Maintain and enforce payroll controls, including review and approval processes, to mitigate errors and support internal/external audit readiness.

Monitor tax filings and payments, ensuring full compliance with all tax reporting obligations and deadlines, including W-2s, 941s, and other required filings.

Support audits (internal, external, and regulatory) by preparing documentation, responding to inquiries, and implementing corrective actions as needed.

Ensure payroll systems and records are maintained with the highest standards of accuracy, security, and confidentiality.

Identify and implement process improvements and automation opportunities to enhance payroll efficiency and reporting.

Provide leadership and guidance to payroll staff and act as the department’s subject matter expert on payroll-related policies and procedures.

Qualifications:

5+ years of payroll experience, including at least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory capacity.

Strong understanding of payroll tax laws, multi-state tax compliance, and fringe benefit taxation.

Proficiency with payroll systems (e.g., ADP, Paycom, Workday) and Microsoft Excel.

Familiarity with internal controls, audit processes, and SOX compliance (if applicable).

Exceptional attention to detail, analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

Excellent communication skills and the ability to interact effectively across departments.
