Job Details

Our public entity defense and civil rights practice represents government entities, agencies, municipalities, and public employees in complex, high-exposure litigation in both state and federal court. This role involves defending matters involving Section 1983 claims, alleged constitutional violations under the New Jersey Civil Rights Act, governmental liability issues, and related public sector disputes. Attorneys handle cases from inception through resolution, including pleadings, written discovery, depositions, motion practice, hearings, mediations, and trial preparation.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Defending government entities, agencies, municipalities, and public employees in civil rights litigation
  • Handling matters involving Section 1983 claims, NJCRA allegations, constitutional violations, and governmental liability defenses
  • Managing cases through all phases of litigation, from early assessment through resolution
  • Drafting and responding to motions to dismiss, summary judgment motions, and qualified immunity defenses
  • Representing clients in state and federal court, including hearings, mediations, and trials
  • Collaborating with government officials, risk managers, and co-counsel to develop case strategy and ensure alignment with public sector protocols
  • Drafting legal opinions and providing risk assessments for public entity clients

Qualifications:

  • J.D. and NJ Bar Admission
  • 2+ years of civil rights litigation experience
  • Familiarity with Section 1983 litigation, NJCRA claims, qualified immunity, and governmental immunities
  • Experience representing or working with public entities, municipalities, or state agencies preferred
  • Prior Attorney General’s Office experience, including current or former Deputy Attorney General background, preferred but not required
  • Strong writing, analytical, advocacy, and motion practice skills
