Summary of Position:

The Quality Laboratory Technician plays a critical role in ensuring the quality and consistency of plastic blown film extrusion manufacturing processes. Reporting to the Quality Manager, this position involves conducting various tests and analyses on raw materials, in-process samples, and finished products to ensure they meet established quality standards. The role requires a detail-oriented individual with a collaborative, inquisitive, and can-do mindset, committed to maintaining product excellence and driving continuous improvement initiatives.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Understanding appropriate and safe laboratory equipment operation to ensure the accurate and reliable analysis of film product.
  • Reviewing production orders to understand product specifications. Perform routine and non-routine tests and analyses on raw materials, in-process samples, and finished products using laboratory equipment and instruments as per production order.
  • Record and interpret test results accurately, maintaining detailed documentation of all testing procedures and outcomes.
  • Identify deviations from quality standards and specifications and collaborate with production and quality teams
  • Authorizing the acceptance and release of products which has been tested and meets quality and safety standards.
  • Utilizing the Hold Tag procedure on product that does not conform to order specification or quality and safety standards.
  • Walking the production floor to obtain product samples from each roll or production period.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of quality control procedures and protocols to improve process efficiency and product quality.
  • Calibrate and maintain laboratory equipment to ensure accuracy and reliability of test results.
  • Communicate effectively with cross-functional teams to convey quality-related information and participate in problem-solving activities.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of quality systems, processes, and procedures.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and regulations in the laboratory environment.
  • Completing a periodic production assessment to ensure product quality and safety standards are strictly adhered to.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct tests for various physical, mechanical, and chemical properties of plastic films, including thickness, tensile strength, elongation, optical properties, and barrier properties.
  • Perform visual inspections and dimensional measurements of film samples.
  • Monitor and control environmental conditions in the laboratory to ensure accurate testing conditions.
  • Assist in investigating and resolving customer complaints related to product quality.
  • Support audits and certifications related to quality management systems.
  • Assisting the Quality Assurance Laboratory Supervisor with special projects, as needed.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; associate degree or technical certification in a relevant field preferred.
  • Three years of experience working in a quality control or laboratory environment, preferably in plastics blown film extrusion or related industry.
  • Familiarity with laboratory equipment and instruments used for quality testing preferred.
  • Proficiency in basic Mathematics is required.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in recording and interpreting test results.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications such as Microsoft Office.
  • Must be fluent in reading, writing, and speaking English.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with quality management systems (e.g., ISO 9001) and statistical analysis tools.
  • Knowledge of plastic film manufacturing processes and industry standards.
  • Ability to troubleshoot equipment issues and perform minor repairs.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
