Essential Functions:
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Assesses physical, psychological, spiritual, cultural, educational and developmental dimensions of the patient and provides written documentation of finding upon admission to the unit.
- Assesses and documents patient condition and responses to nursing and/or medical interventions and communicates the information to the appropriate person.
- Assesses instrumentation, supply and equipment needs based on the scheduled procedure, assessed patient need and physician preferences.
- Develops an individualized plan of care based on nursing assessment, medical diagnoses, and knowledge of specific illnesses, injuries, diseases, surgical procedures and appropriate standards of care.
- Collaborates with other disciplines to maximize patient outcomes and affect a smooth flow of the surgical experience.
- Plans and utilizes resources efficiently to complete the daily schedule in a timely manner while providing safe and individualized patient care.
- Prioritizes and provides nursing care based on the individualized plan of care.
- Provides equipment and supplies based on identified needs and in a timely, efficient and safe manner.
- Demonstrates appropriate knowledge of special needs for various age groups including child, adolescent, adult and geriatric when providing resources for the surgical procedure.
- Adjust and administers patient medications and solutions in accordance to physician orders and department policies and procedures.
- Receives surgical specimens and cultures from the sterile field and handles them appropriately and in compliance with departmental and surgery center policies and procedures.
- Perform surgical counts and medication labeling in compliance with departmental policies and procedures.
- Assists anesthesia personnel and provides psychological and physiological support for the patient during induction, emergence and as needed throughout the intraoperative phase.
- Observe and interpret patient’s symptoms and communicate them to physicians
- Perform routine procedures (blood pressure measurements, administering injections etc.) and document accordingly in each patients’ chart.
- Physiologically monitors the patient during surgery following surgery center departmental policies and procedures.
- Performs activities in a timely manner so as not to cause delays, inconvenience or confusion within the work group.
- Functions within the limits of the Minnesota Nurse Practice Act, State and Federal Laws, Hospital, Nursing Department and Surgical Services Departmental philosophies, policies and procedures and standards of care.
- Reassesses, evaluates and revises the implementation of the plan of care to meet the changing needs of the patient.
- Responds appropriately to changes in the patient’s condition and/or behavior.
- Ability to respond and provide instant medical care in emergent situations.
- Evaluates the patient post-operatively for any injuries related to positioning, extraneous objects, or chemical, physical and electrical/equipment hazards.
- Completes appropriate portions of the patient record accurately, legibly, timely and thoroughly.
- Maintains constant communication with the surgical tech to ensure complete and accurate charting of supplies within Clinical Management and Revenue Cycle database.
- Completes additional patient records as needed accurately, legibly, timely and thoroughly. C-Arm Log, Tissue Banking and any others.
- Chart completion with utilization of approved abbreviations per policy.
- Completes “End of Day Clinical Readiness Checklist” to ensure all Supplies, Instrumentation and Equipment’s are on site and available for next day Surgical Cases.
- Accountable to reporting occurrences through the center’s established occurrence reporting process related to employee and/or patient/visitor events.
- Fosters the developmental and educational process of self, colleagues, orientees and students (includes functioning as a preceptor).
- Participates in acceptable continuing education, fostering career and skill development including meeting departmental continuing education requirements.
- Assists in managing controllable costs by the proper, non-wasteful use of Surgery Center resources.
- Actively participates in Quality projects, as applicable. Identifies issues & assists in collection of data for Quality purposes. Contributes ideas for improvement.
- Contributes personally to the “team oriented” environment by demonstrating cooperative, constructive, problem-solving interaction with all Surgery Center employees.
- Participates in department/team meetings.
- Any and all other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Graduate of an NLN accredited school of registered nursing.
- Current licensure as a RN in the State of MN or WI multi-state required.
- At least one year of OR experience in the last 5 years preferred.
- Current member of AORN preferred.
- Current certification in basic CPR for Healthcare Professionals (BLS) or completed upon hire.
