Position Summary
The Senior Accountant plays a key role in managing the organization’s financial processes and ensuring compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and nonprofit regulations. This role supports the organization’s mission by maintaining accurate financial records, preparing financial reports, and assisting with audits, budgeting, and grant reporting.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare and maintain general ledger entries, monthly reconciliations, and supporting schedules
Manage month-end and year-end closing processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness
Assist in the preparation of internal financial statements and reports for leadership and the Board
Maintain compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards (e.g., FASB, IRS guidelines)
Support grant and fund accounting, including tracking restricted/unrestricted funds
Prepare documentation for annual audits, 990 tax filings, and other compliance reporting
Monitor and reconcile accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll transactions
Assist with budget preparation, forecasting, and variance analysis
Support internal controls and recommend process improvements
Collaborate with program teams to ensure accurate expense tracking and reporting
Serve as a resource to program managers and staff for finance-related inquiries
Qualifications
Required:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit environment
Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit financial standards
Experience with fund accounting and grant reporting
Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, or similar)
Advanced Excel skills and comfort with data analysis
Detail-oriented with strong analytical and organizational skills
Ability to work independently and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
Preferred:
CPA or equivalent certification (or progress toward certification)
Experience with federal and state grants
Familiarity with donor management systems and CRM tools
