Position Overview
The Staff Attorney will serve as the Foundation’s sole in-house attorney, providing practical legal support across a broad range of organizational needs. This role is designed for an attorney who is comfortable working independently, managing outside counsel when needed, and supporting internal teams with clear, business-minded legal guidance.
While this attorney will be the Foundation’s primary legal resource, this is not a senior leadership or executive-level position. The Staff Attorney will work closely with leadership, program teams, operations, finance, HR, and outside counsel to help the Foundation manage legal risk, maintain compliance, and support its mission-driven work.

Responsibilities
- Review, draft, and negotiate contracts, vendor agreements, service agreements, leases, grant-related documents, partnership agreements, MOUs, and other organizational documents
- Provide legal guidance on nonprofit governance, charitable compliance, corporate filings, internal policies, and organizational risk management
- Support compliance efforts related to nonprofit operations, affordable housing programs, education initiatives, community programs, media operations, fundraising, and grant-funded work
- Partner with HR and leadership on employment-related matters, including workplace policies, employee relations, wage and hour compliance, leaves of absence, accommodations, investigations, and separation matters
- Assist with real estate, housing, and property-related legal issues, including leases, development documents, regulatory requirements, and coordination with outside counsel
- Manage and coordinate outside counsel on specialized matters, including litigation, real estate transactions, employment disputes, intellectual property, and regulatory issues
- Review communications, marketing materials, media content, and public-facing documents for legal risk, compliance, and brand protection
- Support internal teams with practical legal advice that balances risk, operational needs, and the Foundation’s mission
- Maintain and organize legal records, contract files, corporate documents, governance materials, and compliance calendars
- Assist with policy development, training, and internal process improvements to strengthen legal and compliance practices across the organization
- Monitor relevant legal and regulatory developments affecting nonprofit organizations, employers, affordable housing operators, media programs, and community-serving organizations
Qualifications
- JD from an accredited law school
- Active license to practice law and in good standing
- Experience with nonprofit, corporate, contracts, employment, real estate, affordable housing, or regulatory matters
- Strong contract drafting, review, and negotiation skills
- Ability to work independently as the organization’s primary internal legal resource
- Comfortable identifying when matters should be escalated to outside counsel or senior leadership
- Sound judgment, practical problem-solving skills, and the ability to provide clear legal guidance to non-legal stakeholders
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities across departments, programs, and deadlines
- Interest in working for a mission-driven organization serving working families, farmworkers, Latinos, and underserved communities
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with nonprofit organizations, foundations, public benefit corporations, affordable housing organizations, community development entities, or mission-driven organizations
- Familiarity with California employment law
- Experience with grant compliance, government funding, charitable solicitation rules, or nonprofit governance
- Experience reviewing leases, real estate documents, vendor contracts, and partnership agreements
- Spanish language skills are helpful but not required
