Key Responsibilities
Qualifications
- Prepare, review, and sign‐off on tax returns for individuals, partnerships, corporations, and trusts.
- Develop tax planning strategies to minimize liability and provide value to clients.
- Research federal, state, and local tax issues; stay up to date on changes in tax laws/regulations.
- Advise clients on tax implications of business choices — e.g. entity selection, acquisitions, real estate, compensation planning, etc.
- Work closely with accounting staff to ensure consistency between bookkeeping/accounting and tax filings.
- Oversee deadlines, ensure compliance with all tax filing requirements.
- Serve as a resource or mentor to junior tax team members; review their work.
- Participate in client meetings: explain complex tax matters in clear, understandable terms.
- Assist in firm initiatives such as process improvement (efficiency, documentation, technology use).
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA designation preferred.
- At least 3-5 years (or more) progressive tax experience — including experience with business tax (corporations, partnerships), plus individual returns.
- Deep understanding of federal, state, and local tax laws, especially Michigan (or relevant state).
- Strong technical research skills; ability to interpret new tax legislation or guidance.
- Excellent communication skills — both verbal and written.
- High attention to detail, strong organizational skills, ability to manage multiple clients/projects and deadlines.
- Ability to mentor junior staff.
- Comfortable using tax software, accounting systems, and Microsoft Office tools; experience with client portals or cloud-based systems is a plus.
